This has been coming for a while, and I feel that now is the right time to finally share it. You may remember that in my recent Birthday Beauty Hauling post I picked up a couple of Sleek’s Matte Me liquid lipsticks…

I don’t really know where to begin with this, but I suppose the start would be somewhere, so let’s go with that. A while ago, like a few years or something similar, I got myself one of Sleek’s Matte Me liquid lipsticks in the shade ‘Roja Red’, I was eager to try this as I was to be my first ever matte liquid lipstick. Basically, I hated it. The formula was just all wrong, it was drying, it was too watery, it was impossible to apply properly and oh my good lord did it stain. It was impossible to get off. This has since sat in the back of my makeup box and not been touched.

Recently, however, I have seen that a lot of people have been really enjoying the new range of Matte Me liquid lipsticks from Sleek, with the new colour range. I thought that perhaps as they had released a new range of them, maybe the formula had changed, and as other people liked them perhaps I will too. I proceeded to browse through Superdrug and pick up a couple of the new colours, ‘Velvet Slipper’ and ‘Shabby Chic’. These colours, let me tell you, are gorgeous! They’re lovely pretty colours, so I was really rooting for these to be decent.

Here we go. I had to swatch these on paper, because after applying each of these to my lips once, they had to come off and never touch my skin again. There are a few differences between these new ones and the oldie, and I will give it to them, some improvement, but this is still by far the worst liquid lipstick I have ever used or seen. The consistency of the newer ones is a lot thicker and slightly creamier, so it does apply more like makeup and less like paint, but it’s still horrendous. The colours are absolutely gorgeous, when wet they are obviously a bit darker, once they’ve dried they are a bit lighter, duh. But, once they’ve dried, it doesn’t matter how pretty you may think they are, they absolutely destroy your lips, dry them out to nothing, crack and peel. Also, for a matte liquid lipstick that feels dryer than the Sahara Desert, they are surprisingly sticky, when you put your lips together you kind of have to tear them apart again. These are so uncomfortable.

A slight improvement that has been made is the applicator, as you can see the old red one is a bit longer with a straight and quite long sponge applicator thingy, whereas the new ones have your expected doe-foot applicator, making it much easier to apply the lipstick so it looks as least slightly decent. But again, the crappy formula makes it difficult to do anything with this that looks decent, other than maybe use it to write on mirrors and chalkboards.  Another improvement and probably the biggest improvement is that the new ones don’t stain your entire face, they actually do come off, which is exactly what they need to do once you have realised how drying and horrible these are.

Okay, I’m going to stop trash talking these now, because you have more than likely got my point. I hate them, end of story. This is a relatively short review, because I couldn’t really keep these on long enough to let you know how long they last or anything else, so sorry about that… but after the revelation of how crap they are, why would you want to keep them on longer than 5 seconds anyway? Oh, and I did try them with a lip-full of lipliner too, it made zero difference.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my honest opinions of these, and if you personally enjoy these then I do not mean to offend your opinion at all, but I can’t stand these. Have you tried them? What did you think? Let me know, and as always, chat to me in the comments!
